Pulse Wave / Shock Wave

Some injuries stall. The plantar fascia that still hurts on the first step out of bed after eight months. The elbow that flares every time you grip something. The Achilles that has been there so long you have stopped mentioning it. These are the cases shockwave therapy was built for.

Pulse Wave shockwave therapy delivers acoustic pressure waves into the injured tissue through the skin. The treatment stimulates blood flow and restarts a repair response in tissue where healing has stalled. Nothing is injected and nothing is cut. You walk in, have the treatment, and walk out.

What a Session Is Actually Like

The honest version, because most patients
arrive with no idea what to expect

A handpiece is pressed against the treatment area with gel, the same way an ultrasound probe is used. It delivers rapid pulses, and the sensation is a firm, fast tapping. Over the sore spot it is intense for the few minutes it is there, and most patients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. You can tell us to ease the intensity at any point.

Treatment of one area takes only a few minutes. There is no anesthetic, no recovery period, and no restriction on driving yourself home. Some soreness in the area over the following day or two is normal and usually a sign the tissue has responded.

Shockwave therapy works as a short course rather than a single session, with visits spaced about a week apart so the tissue has time to respond between them. Improvement tends to build over the course and often continues for several weeks after the last session. We will set the number of sessions after your examination and review your progress as we go.

If the course is not producing a change, we will tell you and look at what else is going on rather than booking more sessions.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is shockwave therapy?

It is a non invasive treatment that sends acoustic pressure waves into injured tissue through the skin. The waves stimulate blood flow and restart the body’s repair response in tissue where healing has stalled. It is used mainly for chronic tendon and fascia problems that have not improved with rest.

Does it hurt?

The sensation is a firm, fast tapping. Over the sore spot it is intense for the few minutes it is there, and most patients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. You can tell us to ease the intensity at any point.

How many sessions will I need?

Shockwave therapy works as a short course, with visits spaced about a week apart. We set the number of sessions after your examination and review your progress as we go.

Is it right for everyone?

No. Shockwave suits some problems very well and others not at all, which is why the examination comes first. If it is not the right treatment for your injury, we will tell you.
